    Meet Casey Stahl, Somerville YMCA's staff nutritionist, at one of her upcoming Nutrition Workshops where she'll share tips to help you make healthy food choices to fit your life.

    Casey is a former national-level athlete and certified sports nutritionist who holds a B.S. in Nutrition from Arizona State University. She spent time as a chef and pastry chef, roles in which she learned that eating healthy does not have to be boring! Casey serves a variety of clients and believes that people of all lifestyles can benefit from healthier meal planning. It is her passion to help people achieve their health and wellness goals.

    Her approach is that everyone - and their lifestyles - are different! Everyone has unique needs and Casey works to help create individualized solutions that work best for each client.

LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA
A holistic, free, small group, 12-week strength and wellness program for adult cancer patients and survivors who have become de-conditioned or chronically fatigued from their treatment and/or disease. We help patients build muscle mass and muscle strength, increase flexibility and endurance, and improve functional ability. The program can also help reduce the severity of therapy side effects, prevent unwanted weight changes, and improve energy levels and self-esteem. Participants learn to develop their own physical fitness program so they can continue to practice a healthy lifestyle as a way of life. Certified YMCA fitness instructors are trained in the elements of cancer, post rehab exercise, and supportive cancer care.

    Get a challenging cardiovascular and full body workout.

  • Youth Self Defense (Ages 7 years to 12 years)
    Get a challenging cardio workout while learning the basics of self defense. Classes are 30 minutes long. Free to all members.

  • Youth Conditioning Boxing (Ages 7 years to 12 years)

    Get a challenging cardiovascular and full body workout required as you kick, punch, block and move. Classes are 45 minutes long. Free to all members.

  • Youth Tabata (Ages 7 years to 12 years)

    Increase your fitness level through high intensity interval training. Interval workouts consist of repetitions of intense work followed by periods of rest. Classes are 30 minutes long. Free to all members.

  • Youth Boot Camp (Ages 7 years to 12 years)

    Warm-up with cardio, then alternate between stations required to improve endurance and strength, all while having fun. Classes are 45 minutes long for ages 7 years to 12 years, and 60 minutes long for kids in 7th grade. Free to all members.

Adult Swim Classes & Programs (Ages 17+ years)
  • Swim Basics: Adult (17+ years)
    Introduces personal water safety, basic swimming skills and the fundamentals of front and back crawl. No Prerequisite.

  • Swim Strokes: Adult (17+ years)
    Builds upon water safety skills and front and back crawl mastered in Swim Basics, while building stroke technique and introducing breaststroke and swimming for fitness.

  • Water Exercise

    Water exercise is great for adults of all ages and abilities looking for fun and fitness in a low impact environment. Classes are offered in the daytime and on some evenings as well as “on your own” opportunities to water walk and do your own workout routine.

Throughout the year, family and open swim times are a great way to connect with families and other members. Please check our schedules for family and open swim times.
High School Swim Clinics
  • High School Warm Up (Ages 14 years to 18 years)

    This 8-week clinic is designed for novice to intermediate swimmers who want to prepare for the High School swim season. Improve butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke and freestyle techniques with starts and turns while increasing endurance. 

Infant & Toddler Swim Classes & Programs (Ages 6 months to 3 years)
  • Water Discovery: Infant (6 months to 1 year)
    Parent/child class in which infants are encouraged to enjoy themselves while learning about the water. No Prerequisite.

  • Water Discovery: Toddler (1 to 2 years)
    Parent/child class in which toddlers explore body positions, floating, blowing bubbles and fundamental water safety skills. Child should be comfortable entering and exiting pool with parent.

  • Water Exploration: Toddler (2 to 3 years)
    Parent/child class in which toddlers are encouraged to enjoy themselves while learning about the water. No Prerequisite.

Preschool Swim Classes & Programs (Ages 3 to 5 years)
  • Stage 1: Water Acclimation (3 to 5 years)
    Develops comfort with underwater exploration and with safely exiting the pool. No prerequisite.



  • Stage 2: Water Movement (3 to 5 years)
    Focuses on body position and control, directional change and forward movement in the water. Child should be comfortably able to go underwater, to front and back float, and to swim assisted for 10 feet.



  • Stage 3: Water Stamina (3 to 5 years)
    Introduces rhythmic breathing, swimming on back, integrated arm and leg action and swimming to safety from a longer distance. Child should be able to float unassisted, to glide off then return to the wall, and to swim on front for 20 feet.



  • Stage 4: Stroke Introduction (3 to 5 years)
    Develops stroke technique in front and back crawl and reinforces water safety through treading water and elementary backstroke. Child should be able to swim on their front and back for 25 yards unassisted and tread water for 15 seconds. 




  • Stage 5: Stroke Development (3 to 5 years)
    Introduces rotary breathing. Must be able to complete 25 yards with coordinated arm and leg movements on both front and back without stopping. Child should be able to float unassisted and be comfortable gliding under the water from the wall to the flags.

Private Swim Lessons
Swimming is a vital life skill. Understanding water safety and how to swim minimizes the risk of drowning while building self-reliance. The Y’s skilled and patient swim instructors offer lessons for all ages and abilities.

Safety Around Water (Ages 3 to 10 years)
Knowing how to swim is not a luxury; it is a necessity. The YMCA’s free Safety Around Water swim program (held in May during Water Safety Month) can help you make sure your children learn essential water safety skills, which can open up a world of possibilities for them to satisfy their curiosity safely.

School Age Swim Classes & Programs (Ages 6 years to 11 years)
  • Stage 1: Water Acclimation (6 to 11 years)
    Develops comfort with underwater exploration and with safely exiting the pool. No prerequisite.

  • Stage 5: Stroke Development (6 to 11 years)
    Continues work on stroke technique, teaches all major competitive strokes and reinforces water safety through treading water and sidestroke. Child should be able to swim front and back crawl for 75-100 yards (3-4 laps), have knowledge of breaststroke, and tread water for 45 seconds. 


  • Stage 6: Stroke Mechanics (6 to 11 years)
    Refines technique on all major competitive strokes, introduces competitive swimming and incorporates swimming into a healthy lifestyle. Child should be able to swim front crawl, back crawl, and breaststroke for 100 yards and have knowledge of butterfly kick.

  • Stage 7: Stroke Endurance (6 to 11 years)
    Improves stroke technique and utilizes longer distance swimming to build endurance. Child should be able to swim front crawl, back crawl and breaststroke for 100 yards with little correction and be able to complete 50 yards of butterfly kick.

  • Stage 8: Stroke Refinement, Starts & Turns (8 to 11 years)
    Explores competitive swimming to include developing swimming strokes and learning how to do starts and flip turns. Child should be able to swim all four competitive strokes for 100 yards with little correction and have basic knowledge of diving.

Special Needs Swim Classes & Programs (Ages 6 to 11 years)

  • Special Needs - Stage 1: Water Acclimation
    For children with moderate to severe neurological, physical or social challenges. Instructor teaches students how to swim and provides guidance on in-water exercises. Adult must accompany the child in the water.

SVY Swim Team
The eight-time NJYMCA State Champion SVY swim team has over 400 swimmers who practice at the Bridgewater, Somerville, and Hillsborough branches. SVY is led by ASCA and USA Swimming certified professional swim coaches, and is a Bronze Medal program recognized by USA Swimming as one of the top-200 teams in the nation. The swimmers ages range from 6 to 18 years and the team competes year-round in YMCA and USA-sanctioned meets.
 
  • Swimmers are placed in practice groups based on age and ability.
  • The primary season runs from September through March and swimmers have the opportunity to compete on a dual meet team and in championship meets.
  • Summer long course season runs from April through July.

Swim Evaluations
Our swim lessons are specifically tailored to the participant’s age, swimming ability, level of physical development and confidence in the water. Participants will advance in the program as they become more skilled in the water.

If you have any questions about the appropriate level for your child, please schedule a complimentary evaluation with us.

Evaluations are held Mon, Wed & Fri at 6:00pm.

Adult Basketball League (Ages 18 years and above)
  • Adult Basketball League (Ages 18 years and above)
    This 10-week league includes 7 regular season games, followed by playoffs. Adults ages 18 years and above, are encouraged to organize their own team. Or, if you prefer, we will put together a team for you.

Basketball (Ages 4 years to 16 years)

Come join one of our basketball skills programs. Have fun as we focus on improving basketball skills and building self esteem.

  • Basketball 1 (Ages 4 years to 5 years)
    Introduces children to the fundamentals of basketball including shooting, passing and dribbling.

    Classes are 30 minutes long.

  • Basketball 2 (Ages 6 years to 10 years)
    Continues the development of new basketball skills and introduces game play.

    Classes are 45 minutes long.

  • All Star Basketball 1 (Ages 5 years to 8 years)
    The coach will guide kids in learning basketball fundamentals to build a strong foundation for the sport while building confidence and self-esteem.

    Classes are 45 minutes long.

  • All Star Basketball 2 (Ages 9 years to 14 years)
    The coach will continue to build kids' skills on the court through dribbling, passing, shooting and defensive drills. Team concepts of offensive play and zone defense will be taught in a values-oriented session.

    Classes are 45 minutes long.

  • Drop in Youth Basketball Clinics (Ages 9 years to 16 years)

    Participants can expect to run drills that will improve their speed and agility.

    Players will be split into two groups for intermediate, recreation, school level players and travel, AAU, high school level players.

Net Sports (Ages 13 years and older)
  • Badminton (Ages 13 years and older)

    This paddle sport is designed for all ages and skill levels. Simple rules make it perfect for beginners and it can develop into a fast-paced game. You’ll get great exercise while having a ball!

    This is a free program offered to members.

  • Pickleball (Ages 13 years and older)

    A fun way to combine elements of badminton, tennis, and table tennis using solid paddles to hit polymer ball over a net.

  • Volleyball (Ages 13 years and older)

    Gather your friends on Wednesday nights and Sunday mornings for open volleyball. We provide the net, the ball, and the fun!

    This free program is offered to members.

Open Gym (All ages)

In addition to physical benefits, exercise helps kids to be more alert by improving cognitive abilities. Our Open Gym time allows kids to stay active, improve focus, and have fun with family.

    Join us for weekly games of Capture the Flag, Dodgeball and other recess style games. Kids will have fun while being active.

Soccer (Ages 4 years to 10 years)
  • Soccer 1 (Ages 4 years to 5 years)
    Introduces children to basic soccer skills. Dribbling, passing, shooting and field position are taught in a positive, nurturing environment.

    Classes are 30 minutes long.

  • Soccer 2 (Ages 6 years to 10 years)
    Focuses on improving the necessary skills to start game action. The class introduces teamwork drills and sportsmanship.

    Introduces children to a variety of sports while they improve motor skills, stay active and have fun.

The benefits of exercise through gymnastics will carry over to all aspects of kids’ lives. Gymnastics helps to develop their whole “self” and to build strength physically and emotionally.

  • Girls Level 1 Gymnastics (Ages 4 years to 7 years)

    Beginner and Intermediate level gymnastics. This level focuses on all the basics of bars, beam, vault and floor to teach the skills needed to advance in the sport.

    Classes are 60 minutes long.

  • Girls Level 2 Gymnastics (Ages 4 years to 7 years)

    Beginner and Intermediate level gymnastics. This level focuses on all the basics of bars, beam, vault and floor to teach the skills needed to advance in the sport.

  • Introduction to Tae Kwon Do (Ages 4 years to 6 years)
    Children are introduced to basic martial arts etiquette, terms and stances while emphasizing discipline, respect, listening skills and courtesy.

  • Tae Kwon Do (Ages 6 years to 13 years)
    This class places an emphasis on positive reinforcement and empowers kids to progress through the ranks from White to Black Belt. Additional uniform and belt testing fees apply.

  • CPR/AED FULL Class

    This American Red Cross classroom-based course teaches how to recognize several life-threatening emergencies, provide CPR to victims of all ages, use an AED, and relieve choking in a safe, timely, and effective manner. Pocket mask and textbook included.

  • CPR/AED Review

    This is an American Red Cross review class for people who have current professional level CPR cards. Cards must be brought to class. Mask included.

    Classes are 2 hours 30 minutes long.

    Use LEGO bricks, axles, pulleys, gears, and motors to create fun and interactive models. Offered in conjunction with Bricks 4 Kidz, this class emphasizes S.T.E.M. concepts through hands-on learning.

Lifeguard Training (Ages 15 years and above)

These courses, for individuals age 15 years and older, include Lifeguard, CPR/AED and First Aid certifications. To enroll in these courses, certain swim skills must be demonstrated as a prerequisite for participation.

  • Lifeguard Pretest (Ages 15 years and above)

    Please register for your Lifeguard Pretest. Once you pass the pretest, you will be enrolled in and charged for the next Lifeguard Certification course.

    Participants must swim 300 yards continuously, demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. Candidates may swim using the front crawl, breaststroke, or a combination of both, but swimming on the back or side is not allowed. Swimming goggles may be used during the 300 yard swim. Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs. Candidates should place their hands under their armpits. Starting in the water, swim 20 yards, surface dive to a depth of 7-10 feet, retrieve a ten-pound object, return to the surface, swim 20 yards on back with both hands on the object and exit the water without using a ladder or steps, within 1 minute, 40 seconds. Goggles may not be worn during this swim. The fee does not include the certification course. The total cost of this 3-day course with pre-test is $325 for members and $375 for non-members; the balance will be charged upon completion to your chosen payment method.

  • Lifeguarding Certification Course (Ages 15 and above)

    Learn the skills and knowledge needed to perform water rescue, as well as First Aid and CPR. Participants will receive American Red Cross Liefeguarding, First Aid and CPR/AED for professional rescuer certificates. Participants must be 15 years old by the end of the course and pass the pre-test before taking the course. The fee does not include the pre-test. The total cost of this 3-day course with pre-test is $325 for members and $375 for non-members; the balance will be charged upon completion to your chosen payment method.

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Training

Reducing the stigma associated with Mental Health isn’t easy, but we are committed to making strides. In collaboration with other local organizations, the Y has taken a leadership position to offer ongoing, sustained education to the community in hopes of reducing the stigma of mental health, building awareness, and connecting people to the appropriate mental health care providers.

MHFA is an evidence-based, public education program certification course that helps participants recognize, understand, and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders.

  • Adult Mental Health First Aid
    This interactive, 8-hour course (over 2 days) gives participants an overview of mental illness and teaches them about the risk factors of common mental illnesses in adults including depression, anxiety, bi-polar disorder, psychosis, and substance abuse disorder. Those who complete the course become certified as Mental Health First Aiders and will be able to implement a 5-step action plan to help an individual in crisis connect with appropriate professional, peer, social, and self-help care.

  • Youth Mental Health First Aid
    This interactive 8-hour course (over 2 days) presents the risk factors and warning signs of a variety of mental health challenges common among adolescents, including anxiety, depression, substance use and suicide. Participants learn a core five-step action plan to support an adolescent developing signs and symptoms of mental illness or in an emotional crisis. The course is designed for adults who regularly interact with adolescents, but may also be appropriate for mature teenagers (16 and older). Anyone who regularly works or interacts with youth at home, at work or in the community will benefit from becoming a certified Mental Health First Aider.

Model UN (Ages 11 to 15 years)
  • Model UN

    Model UN is a way for students to gain global education. Students learn how the United Nations operates and its role in peacekeeping and humanitarian work.

    This program is led by a seasoned teen volunteer with six years of Model UN experience. Participants will have an opportunity to qualify for the Yale Model UN Program in January. $30 materials fee.

    Children will learn the basic fundamentals of singing with a focus of fun and building confidence. From Broadway to Disney and even pop classics to teach children the importance of breathing, timing and harmonizing.

  • Friday Night Dance Party (Ages 13 years to 18 years)

    Spirited and fun class for those attending Planet Y to learn the basics of Hip Hop, Freestyle, and other engaging styles of dance for teens. This will be held the first Friday of every month. 

  • Planet Y (Grades 7 to 12)

    Every Friday night from 7:00 pm - 9:30 pm, kids in 7th - 12th grades are invited to the Y to enjoy our Open Gym to play any sport they'd like. They have fun with friends while engaging in healthy choices. Planet Y is free for Y members, and just $3 per night for guests.

We are proud to be part of Healthy U, a statewide initiative to combat child obesity. Healthy U educates kids about healthy eating and incorporates physical activity into childcare settings.

In our Early Education Center and School Age Child Care, we nurture the potential of every child in a caring and enriching learning environment. Our trusted programs stimulate children’s academic abilities and creativity while developing their individuality and social skills.     Toddlers are introduced to shapes, colors, letters and numbers as they explore the world through hands-on activities. Toddlers also enhance their social skills through stories, music, science and games.

    Children participate in age-appropriate, engaging group activities that support literacy, language and math. Preschoolers develop socially, emotionally, physically and cognitively as they explore patterns, numbers, letters and a variety of enrichment activities, including weekly swim lessons (for potty-trained children).
  • Preschool 2 (Ages 4 years to 5 years)
    Children acquire kindergarten readiness skills by exploring the worlds of science, math, literacy and social studies. Our pre-K students learn the alphabet, develop pre-writing and pre-reading skills, as well as early number concepts. Children also enjoy science, gym and weekly swim lessons.
  • Little Sprouts (Ages 18 months to 5 years)
    A morning program from 9:00 am to 11:30 am, that introduces children to the classroom. We focus on encouraging social skills and fostering a love of learning. Literacy, science and math are explored through group projects. 
  • Little Sprouts Extended (Ages 2 1/2 years to 5 years)
    An extended program from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm that introduces children to the classroom. We focus on encouraging social skills and fostering a love of learning. Literacy, science and math are explored through group projects. Additional enrichment is offered.
