SCHOOL YEAR DANCE PROGRAM

At Hillsborough YMCA, kids ages 2.5-13 tap into their sense of discovery and self-expression while learning a wide variety of techniques with patience and care. Classes are cumulative in nature and include ballet, Bharatanatyam, jazz, hip hop and tap- -all culminating in an end-of-year recital event.

TEEN CIVIC ENGAGEMENT

The immersive national Y-USA program, Youth and Government™ (Grades 7-12), at Hillsborough YMCA offers students experiential civic engagement in which students debate issues affecting citizens of their state and propose legislation that responds to those issues. Culminates with teens serving as delegates at a state conference.

WEIGHT LOSS PROGRAM

Reach your wellness goals with the Y! Our proven Weight Loss Program is designed to help people seeking a healthier weight achieve their goals by making small, modest changes to their daily behaviors and forming sustainable healthy habits. This 12- week program will introduce participants to behaviors that have been shown to lead to sustained weight loss and invite participants to develop personalized weekly action plans that incorporate what is learned during each session.

    Losing weight can be tough, but we’re here to help! Join our Weight Loss Program, designed to help people seeking a healthier weight achieve their goals by making small, modest changes to their daily behaviors and following healthy lifestyle habits

    Participants in the 12-week program meet once a week to discuss topics relevant to weight loss and discuss goals for the coming week. Participants should be ready to commit to daily food and physical activity tracking as well as developing self-designed weekly action plans that incorporate what is learned during each session.

LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA
A holistic, free, small group, 12-week strength and wellness program for adult cancer patients and survivors who have become de-conditioned or chronically fatigued from their treatment and/or disease. We help patients build muscle mass and muscle strength, increase flexibility and endurance, and improve functional ability. The program can also help reduce the severity of therapy side effects, prevent unwanted weight changes, and improve energy levels and self-esteem. Participants learn to develop their own physical fitness program so they can continue to practice a healthy lifestyle as a way of life. Certified YMCA fitness instructors are trained in the elements of cancer, post rehab exercise, and supportive cancer care.

Running Club (Ages 13 years and above)
Somerset County YMCA’s Adult Running Club provides individuals with a fun, supportive environment to discover and progress in the sport of running. Our USATF certified coaches, Mark, Ali, Miriam and Jason, will prepare workouts based upon your goals, whether you’re planning to run your first 5K or preparing for a marathon. Club members will receive a free running club t-shirt.

  • Youth INSANITY (Ages 7 years to 12 years)

    This 30-minute workout will help kids build coordination and muscle movement using their own body weight.

  • Youth Running Club (Ages 7 years to 13 years)
    The purpose of the Youth Running Club is to foster a love of running among kids. The curriculum will introduce the components of running, training and racing. It will explore running as a sport, similar to youth football, baseball and soccer leagues.

    Classes are 50 minutes long.

  • Youth Zumba (Ages 7 years to 12 years)

    Come dance to rockin', high-energy, choreographed Latin and international music routines in a kid‑friendly dance fitness class!

    Classes are 50 minutes long. Free to all members. Registration required.

  • Youth Yoga (Ages 7 years to 12 years)
    Kids Yoga is a fun way to develop balance, strength, and flexibility for body and mind. Children's concentration, self esteem and confidence will improve while feeling a sense of community by using a dynamic sequence of Yoga and playing games.

    Classes are 50 minutes long.

Youth Running Club (Ages 7 years to 13 years)
Somerset County YMCA’s Youth Running Club provides kids with a fun, supportive environment to discover the sport of running. Our USATF certified coaches, Mark, Ali, Miriam and Jason, will prepare students with the skills and stamina to walk, jog or run for 30 minutes without stopping. This 10-week club is a great option for kids interested in Track and Field. Club members will receive a free club t-shirt.

Adult Swim Classes & Programs (Ages 17+ years)
  • Swim Basics: Adult (17+ years)
    Introduces personal water safety, basic swimming skills and the fundamentals of front and back crawl. No Prerequisite.

  • Swim Strokes: Adult (17+ years)
    Builds upon water safety skills and front and back crawl mastered in Swim Basics, while building stroke technique and introducing breaststroke and swimming for fitness.

  • U.S. Masters Swimming (Ages 18+ years)
    Our U.S. Masters Swimming program appropriately challenges beginner to competitive swimmers by improving stroke technique. Whether you are a traditional competitive master’s swimmer, an open water swimmer, a triathlete, or you just want to swim for fun, this program is for you! Not only is swimming a life skill, but this program will help you develop a healthier lifestyle through swimming, build friendships through our members, and grow by meeting your personal fitness goals.

Family & Open Swim
Throughout the year, family and open swim times are a great way to connect with families and other members. Please check our schedules for family and open swim times.
Infant & Toddler Swim Classes & Programs (Ages 6 months to 3 years)
  • Water Discovery: Infant (6 months to 1 year)
    Parent/child class in which infants are encouraged to enjoy themselves while learning about the water. No Prerequisite.

  • Water Discovery: Toddler (1 to 2 years)
    Parent/child class in which toddlers are encouraged to enjoy themselves while learning about the water. No Prerequisite.

  • Water Exploration: Toddler (2 to 3 years)
    Parent/child class in which toddlers explore body positions, floating, blowing bubbles and fundamental water safety skills. Child should be comfortable entering and exiting pool with parent.

Preschool Swim Classes & Programs (Ages 3 to 5 years)
  • Stage 1: Water Acclimation (3 to 5 years)
    Develops comfort with underwater exploration and with safely exiting the pool. No prerequisite.

  • Stage 2: Water Movement (3 to 5 years)
    Focuses on body position and control, directional change and forward movement in the water. Child should be comfortably able to go underwater, to front and back float, and to swim assisted for 10 feet.

  • Stage 3: Water Stamina (3 to 5 years)
    Introduces rhythmic breathing, swimming on back, integrated arm and leg action and swimming to safety from a longer distance. Child should be able to float unassisted, to glide off then return to the wall, and to swim on front for 20 feet.

  • Stage 4: Stroke Introduction (3 to 5 years)
    Develops stroke technique in front and back crawl and reinforces water safety through treading water and elementary backstroke. Child should be able to swim on their front and back for 25 yards unassisted and tread water for 15 seconds. 


  • Stage 5: Stroke Development
    Introduces rotary breathing. Must be able to complete 25 yards with coordinated arm and leg movements on both front and back without stopping. Child should be able to float unassisted and be comfortable gliding under the water from the wall to the flags.

Private Swim Lessons

Swimming is a vital life skill. Understanding water safety and how to swim minimizes the risk of drowning while building self-reliance. The Y’s skilled and patient swim instructors offer lessons for all ages and abilities.

Safety Around Water (Ages 3 to 10 years)
Knowing how to swim is not a luxury; it is a necessity. The YMCA’s free Safety Around Water swim program (held in May during Water Safety Month) can help you make sure your children learn essential water safety skills, which can open up a world of possibilities for them to satisfy their curiosity safely.

School Age Swim Classes & Programs (Ages 6 years to 11 years)
  • Stage 1: Water Acclimation (6 to 11 years)

  • Stage 5: Stroke Development (6 to 11 years)
    Continues work on stroke technique, teaches all major competitive strokes and reinforces water safety through treading water and sidestroke. Child should be able to swim front and back crawl for 75-100 yards (3-4 laps), have knowledge of breaststroke, and tread water for 45 seconds. 



  • Stage 6: Stroke Mechanics (6 to 11 years)
    Refines technique on all major competitive strokes, introduces competitive swimming and incorporates swimming into a healthy lifestyle. Child should be able to swim front crawl, back crawl, and breaststroke for 100 yards and have knowledge of butterfly kick.

  • Stage 7: Stroke Endurance (6 to 11 years)
    Improves stroke technique and utilizes longer distance swimming to build endurance. Child should be able to swim front crawl, back crawl and breaststroke for 100 yards with little correction and be able to complete 50 yards of butterfly kick.

  • Stage 8: Stroke Refinement, Starts & Turns (8 to 11 years)
    Explores competitive swimming to include developing swimming strokes and learning how to do starts and flip turns. Child should be able to swim all four competitive strokes for 100 yards with little correction and have basic knowledge of diving.

SVY Swim Team
The eight-time NJYMCA State Champion SVY swim team has over 400 swimmers who practice at the Bridgewater, Somerville, and Hillsborough branches. SVY is led by ASCA and USA Swimming certified professional swim coaches, and is a Bronze Medal program recognized by USA Swimming as one of the top-200 teams in the nation. The swimmers ages range from 6 to 18 years and the team competes year-round in YMCA and USA-sanctioned meets.
 
  • Swimmers are placed in practice groups based on age and ability.
  • The primary season runs from September through March and swimmers have the opportunity to compete on a dual meet team and in championship meets.
  • Summer long course season runs from April through July.

Swim Evaluations
Our swim lessons are specifically tailored to the participant’s age, swimming ability, level of physical development and confidence in the water. Participants will advance in the program as they become more skilled in the water.

If you have any questions about the appropriate level for your child, please schedule a complimentary evaluation with us.

Evaluations are held Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Sports, Leagues & Games
Adult Basketball League (Ages 18 years and above)
  • Men's Basketball League (Ages 25 years and above)
    Seven regular season games, followed by double elimination playoffs. All games are officiated by certified referees with stats and standings kept weekly. Teams will have scheduled times between 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm. Fall Season will begin Sept. 20.

Basketball (Ages 4 years to 12 years)
  • Basketball 1 (Ages 4 years to 5 years)

    Start the little ones early. Smaller basketballs and hoops, but the same skills, make this class perfect for younger children. Shooting, passing and dribbling are the focus in many fun and run games to keep them engaged in learning the sports invented by the YMCA!

    Classes are 30 minutes long.

  • Basketball 2 (Ages 6 years to 7 years)

    Introduces children to the basketball fundamentals including shooting, passing and dribbling, while building positive development and confidence.

    Classes are 45 minutes long.

  • Basketball 3 (Ages 8 years to 9 years)

    Continues the development of basketball skills by teaching new abilities through drills. Game play will be introduced.

    Classes are 45 minutes long.

  • Basketball 4 (Ages 10 years to 12 years)

    A program focused on game play, kids will develop skills and knowledge of the game through modified and full court action.

    Classes are 45 minutes long.

Flag Football (Ages 5 years to 8 years)
  • Flag Football (Ages 5 years to 8 years)

    Introduces children to football essentials including throwing, catching and the rules of the game. Mock games will be introduced throughout the session. 

Open Gym (All ages)

In addition to physical benefits, exercise helps kids to be more alert by improving cognitive abilities. Our Open Gym time allows kids to stay active, improve focus, and have fun with family.

Recess Games (Ages 4 years to 12 years)
  • Recess Games (Ages 4 years to 5 years)

    Join us weekly for games of capture the flag, dodgeball, and many more recess style games. Kids will have fun while getting physical activity.

    Classes are 30 minutes long.

    Join us weekly for games of capture the flag, dodgeball, and many more recess style games. Kids will have fun while getting physical activity.

  • Soccer 1 (Ages 3 1/2 to 5 years)

    Introduces children to basic soccer skills. Dribbling, passing, shooting and field position are taught in a positive, nurturing environment. Classes are 30 minutes long.

  • Soccer 2 (Ages 6 years to 7 years)

    Focuses on improving the necessary skills to start game action. The class introduces teamwork drills and sportsmanship. Classes are 45 minutes long.

T Ball (Ages 3 1/2 years to 5 years)
  • T-Ball (Ages 3 1/2 years to 5 years)

    Teaches the basics of hitting, throwing and catching, as well as the basic fundamentals of the sport.

    Classes are 30 minutes long.

Y Sports (Ages 3 1/2 years to 5 years)
  • Y Sports (Ages 3 years to 5 years)

    Introduces children to a variety of sports while they improve motor skills, stay active and have fun. Classes are 30 minutes long.

  • Beginner Ballet and Tap Combo (Ages 2.5 to 5 years)
    Introduces little ones to dance vocabulary and technique while they learn ballet and tap basics and have a ton of fun.

    Classes are 30 minutes long.

  • Ballet/Tap Combo (Ages 4 years to 5 years)

    Prior Ballet and Tap vocabulary and technique is reinforced and new vocabulary and technique is learned. Training in strength, balance, flexibility and discipline is begun as well as developing rhythm, style and sound.

  • Beginner Jazz & Hip Hop Combo (Ages 2.5 to 5 years)
    Introduces little ones to dance vocabulary and technique while they learn jazz and hip-hop basics and develop their own unique style and personality.

    Classes are 30 minutes long.

  • Contemporary Ballet (Ages 6 years to 9 years)

    Contemporary Ballet is an extremely artistic style of dance. It is a fusion of ballet and modern dance that tells an emotional journey. Students will gain confidence in conveying an emotional story through dance while learning ballet technique and choreography and exploring their own creative freedom.

    Classes are 45 minutes long.

  • Intermediate Bharatanatyam
    A classical dance of South India involving footwork, hand gestures and facial expressions on traditional Indian themes. Intermediate class is designed for students with some previous experience and will focus on developing technique while mastering a complete dance.

  • Tap (Ages 6 years to 9 years)

    Prior vocabulary and technique is reinforced and new vocabulary and technique is learned. Tap classes are designed to develop rhythm, style and sound. Students will learn a variety of tap styles from Broadway to Rhythm tap. Exercises focus on building flexibility of the knee and ankles, coordination, and speed of movement.

  • Tap (Ages 10 years to 14 years)
    Vocabulary and technique is learned and reinforced. Tap classes are designed to develop rhythm, style and sound. Students will learn a variety of tap styles from Broadway to Rhythm tap. Exercises focus on building flexibility of the knee and ankles, coordination, and speed of movement.

    Classes are 45 minutes long.

  • Hip Hop (Ages 6 years to 9 years)

  • All Boys Hip Hop (Ages 6 years to 9 years)

    Does your son want to take dance class but not with all of the girls? This Hip Hop class is for them! Hip Hop is an upbeat urban style of dance that is forever evolving. This is a high energy class focusing on musicality and rhythm and encouraging students to step outside of the box by bringing their own individual style and personality to the movements.

  • Jazz (Ages 6 years to 9 years)

    This class will focus on learning proper dance technique such as isolations of the body, improving performance quality and developing complex rhythms and patterns. Students will be exposed to various styles of jazz such as Broadway, Street and Contemporary to help develop a well rounded dancer.

  • Creative Movement (Ages 2.5 years to 4 years)

    Children will embark on an imaginative journey into the world of movement and dance. Each class will have a different "Summer" theme offering a variety of activities to engage both body and mind. Develop creativity, coordination, and spatial awareness in a safe and fun environment.

    Children will embark on an imaginative journey into the world of movement and dance. Each class will have a different "Summer" theme offering a variety of activities to engage both body and mind. Develop creativity, coordination, and spatial awareness in a safe and fun environment.

  • Baby Bollywood Fusion (Ages 3 years to 4 years)

    "Bollywood" is the name given to the Indian film/music industry, the largest movie production industry in the world. Most Indian movies have several Bollywood song/dance sequences, much like a traditional American musical. The dance form combines Hip Hop, Folk, Classical, Bhangra, and Modern styles of dance and is upbeat and expressive. Students will learn Bollywood choreography from an instructor who has appeared in several Bollywood films and trained with top Bollywood dancers and choreographers.

  • Musical Theater (Ages 6 years to 9 years)

    Students learn a variety of dance disciplines that include elements of ballet, jazz and modern while dancing to Musical Theater & Broadway tunes. We will also work on vocal and acting skills.

  • Musical Theater (Ages 10 years to 14 years)

    Students learn a variety of dance disciplines that include elements of ballet, jazz and modern while dancing to Musical Theater & Broadway tunes. We will also work on vocal and acting skills.

Dance Classes for Adults
  • Creative Movement for Dancers with Different Abilities (Ages 18 years and above)

    Come dance with us in a safe, structured environment lead by staff with 15+ years experience with individuals with different abilities. Participants will thrive in a creative environment by encouraging self-expression, adapting learning techniques to fit each individual. We will work on creative self-expression, body awareness, social skills, discovering strengths and discovering new talents.

  • Move Together - Parent/Child (Ages 6 months to 2 years)

    A creative movement class perfect for the child who is just beginning to explore self-awareness and music or the child who still needs a little more time before separating from the parent or caregiver. Parents or caregivers participate actively in the class and benefit as well as their children learn basic dance steps and terminology through songs, stories and play. This class will build self-confidence to help them prepare for future classes as well as provide a fantastic bonding experience for parent or caregiver and their child.

    Teaches the skills necessary to excel in various mediums, including painting, drawing, cartooning and more. A supply purchase will be required. Class begins Sept 16th.

  • Beginner Photography (Ages 8 years to 11 years)
    Explore the artist's eye through the lens of a camera. Learn the basics of taking a great picture, from landscapes to portraits. Children will put their best photos on display at the Y.

  • Crazy Chemistry
    Learn about the chemistry that you encounter every day with STEAM Works Studio. Experiment hands-on with real chemical reactions and chemistry-based projects each class. Ages 5-7yrs.

  • Nano Bots Robotics (Ages 5 - 8 years)

    Nano Bots utilizes a curriculum which employs LEGO-based kits appropriate for hands-on building and programming projects that introduce Science, Technology, Engineer, Math and Art concepts in a fun manner.

  • SCRATCH Games
    Learn to create your own games, fun stories and animations with STEAM Works Studios. Using SCRATCH's drag and drop programming, designed by MIT, students will use coding to create their very own masterpieces. Ages 6-10yrs.

  • Silly Circuits
    Explore the fun world of electronics with STEAM Works Studio. Students will learn about electronics while doing fun crafts. Add LED lights, motors and sound to paper circuits like greeting cards and origami projects. Ages 5-7yrs. 

Music Lessons (All ages)
  • Guitar Lessons
    Making music involves multiple skill sets, which can stimulate learning in other aspects of kids’ lives. Music lessons can improve language and memory skills, as well as self expression. Private and semi-private lessons available for all levels beginner to advanced.

  • Intro to Cooking (Ages 6 years to 9 years)
    Introduces children to the basics of cooking involving simple recipes. They’ll have fun broadening their palate with smoothies, pasta, and more! Little chefs learn recipes and proper kitchen techniques.

    This paddle sport is designed for all ages and skill levels. Simple rules make it perfect for beginners and it can develop into a fast-paced game. You'll get great exercise while having a ball!

A Floor Supervisor will instruct members on the proper techniques for using the machines. Each orientation is about 30 minutes. Please wear comfortable workout clothes and sneakers.

Youth Wellness Orientation (Ages 11 years to 13 years)

For member between 11-13 years of age. This 30-minute orientation gives younger members the opportunity to learn safe and effective exercise principles through supervised practice on cardio and strength machines. After completing the session, participants are awarded a badge to be worn in the Wellness Center, which indicates they are allowed to exercise independently.

Before and After School Care (Grades K to 8)
Before the school day begins and when the school bell rings at the end of the day, working parents can relax knowing that their children are in the Y’s care in a safe, supervised space. In our before and after school program, kids benefit from both academic support and social interaction, as they focus on homework and participate in fun physical and other extra-curricular activities such as swimming.

    Your morning Woodfern, Triangle or Hillsborough Elementary kindergartner will experience academic and extra-curricular activities to enhance their educational and social development. In our Early Education Center and School Age Child Care Program, we nurture the potential of every child in a caring and enriching learning environment. Our trusted programs stimulate children’s academic abilities and creativity while developing their individuality and social skills. We accommodate full-time or part-week schedules, and enrollment takes place on an ongoing basis. Financial assistance is available through a confidential application process. We are proud to be part of Healthy U, a statewide initiative to combat child obesity. Healthy U educates kids about healthy eating and incorporates physical activity into childcare settings. Our hours are from 6:30 am to 6:30 pm.

  • Infant Care (Ages 6 weeks to 18 months)
    Infants develop cognitive and sensory skills through music, storytelling, educational and physical activities. Our experienced teachers engage children while providing nurturing care tailored to each infant's schedule.
  • Toddlers (Ages 18 months to 2 1/2 years)
    Toddlers explore the world through hands-on activities that include music, sports, stories and science in a group setting that enhances their social skills. We also introduce them to shapes, colors, letters and numbers. 
  • Little Sprouts (Ages 3 to 4 1/2 years)
    A morning program, 2, 3 or 5 days per week, that introduces children to the classroom. We focus on encouraging social skills to build a foundation for your child and fostering a love of learning. Literacy, science and math are explored through group projects.
  • Preschool 1 (Ages 2 1/2 years to 3 1/2 years)
    Children participate in age-appropriate, engaging group activities. Our staff inspires and supports literacy, math and language both socially and cognitively through interactive learning, such as recognizing patterns, sequences, numbers, and letters. Children also enjoy music, gym, and weekly swim lessons (for potty-trained children).
  • Preschool 2 (Ages 3 1/2 years to 4 1/2 years)
    Children acquire kindergarten readiness skills by exploring the worlds of science, math, literacy, and social studies. Our Preschool 2 students learn the alphabet, develop pre-writing and pre-reading skills, as well as early number concepts. Children also enjoy science, gym, and weekly swim lessons.
  • Pre-Kindergarten Plus (Age 4 1/2 years to 5 years)
    Designed for children who miss the kindergarten cut-off date and have already experienced Preschool II level class. Children are prepared for the rigors of kindergarten and challenged with enhanced readiness skills in math, science, literacy, phonics and language. Social skills are encouraged through group projects, physical fitness, weekly swim lessons and recreational swim time.
Kidz Korner (Babysitting for ages 2 months to 13 years)

Kidz Korner babysitting is complimentary and included in Adult and Family Memberships. It is open to children age 2 months to 13 years for two hours daily during normally scheduled hours.
