Arts Classes for Kids

Kids grow so much when they have the opportunity to unleash their imagination and creativity. The Y Arts program celebrates creativity, individuality, respect and diversity. Kids are free to learn and create through new artistic experiences.

Drama (Ages 6 years to 12 years)
  • Musical Theater (Ages 6 years to 10 years)

    Students will learn to sing, dance and act as they are introduced to scenes and songs from Broadway Musicals and more. Vocal skills, theater vocabulary, choreography and technique are learned and reinforced. This class is for any skill level and will be adapted to suit both the individual and group. Watch your child’s confidence and speech skyrocket as they develop skills that they can use both in and outside of the classroom.

    Classes are 45 minutes long.

Kids Art Classes (Ages 7 years to 13 years)
  • Art Class (Ages 7 years to 13 years)

    Teaches the skills necessary to excel in various mediums, including painting, drawing, cartooning and more. A supply purchase will be required. Class begins Sept 16th.

    Classes are 45 minutes long.

  • Beginner Photography (Ages 8 years to 11 years)
    Explore the artist's eye through the lens of a camera. Learn the basics of taking a great picture, from landscapes to portraits. Children will put their best photos on display at the Y.

    Classes are 45 minutes long.

Cooking Classes (Ages 7 years to 12 years)
  • Intro to Cooking (Ages 6 years to 9 years)
    Introduces children to the basics of cooking involving simple recipes. They’ll have fun broadening their palate with smoothies, pasta, and more! Little chefs learn recipes and proper kitchen techniques.

    Classes are 30 minutes long.

Preschool Art Classes (Ages 3 years to 5 years)

For young children, art is a wonderful sensory exercise that helps them explore the world around them through color, texture and material. Activities foster creativity and imagination.

  • Interdisciplinary Art for Kids (Ages 4 years to 5 years)
    This preschool class is interdisciplinary, incorporating literature with art instruction. This pairing helps children engage in learning, while introducing a variety of concepts. Classes are 45 minutes long.

  • Preschool Drawing and Painting (Ages 4 years to 5 years)
    This is a beginner's class for preschoolers who are interested in drawing and painting. 

  • Preschool Pottery for Kids (Ages 4 years to 5 years)
    This class is designed to let your little one get their hands muddy and have some fun getting creative with clay. Please dress for mess and bring in old shirt/smock to wear.

    Classes are 45 minutes long.

  • Preschool Arts & Crafts (Ages 4 years to 5 years)

    This class will introduce your little one to clay, mosaics, jewelry/beading, painting, collage and more.

Kids Art Classes (Ages 5 years to 13 years)

Art fosters important creative thinking skills among children. Our art classes allow kids to have adventurous, safe fun by learning about color, texture, shape and material.

  • Acrylic Painting (Ages 8 years to 11 years)
    Students will learn tips and tricks for painting with acrylics. Blending, washes, texture and edges will be covered as well as color and composition.

  • After School Arts & Crafts (Ages 6 years to 11 years)

    This class will include fun arts and crafts such as clay, mosaics, jewelry and more!

  • After School Pottery (Ages 6 years to 11 years)
    Get fired up! If you enjoy getting your hands muddy and having fun, a pottery class is the place to be. Please dress for mess and bring in old shirt/smock to wear. Classes are 60 minutes long.

  • Animal Imagination (Ages 6 to 10 years)
    Purrrfect for young artists who love all kinds of animals - real and imaginary. Animal-themed projects bring art and animals together. We will explore drawing, painting and collage. Classes are 60 minutes long.

  • Under the Sea (Ages 6 years to 8 years)
    Create two- and three-dimensional works of art based on the beauty of the ocean. Mix your own salt clay, make beach inspired jewelry, watercolor seascapes, and more.

  • Art & Nature (Ages 8 years to 11 years)
    Explore art in nature and nature in art! Have fun creating art using leaves, sticks, and rocks by making collages, prints, and paintings.

  • Drawing and Painting (Ages 6 years to 8 years)

    This is a beginner's class for artists developing their skills. Weekly projects encourage exploration of traditional wet and dry materials including pencil, charcoal, watercolor and acrylic paint. 

  • Meet the Masters (Ages 6 years to 10 years)

    Meet a new artist each session from Matisse (collages) to Mondrian (primary colors) to Van Gogh (painting), while you explore various mediums. An ideal beginning art class.Classes are 60 minutes long.

  • Messy Art (Ages 6 years to 10 years)
    Dress for mess and artistic success! This class lets your child explore the messy side of Art with paper mache, paint and watercolor. Please wear a smock. Ages 6-10yrs. 

  • Young Artists (Ages 8 years to 12 years)

    Unlock your talent at a young age in our new class! Classes are 60 minutes long. ​

These afterschool programs are held at Bedwell Elementary School in Bernardville and Bedminster School.

Annual Drawing Workshop (All Ages)

Each year in the Spring, the Y hosts the Lucia Bocchino Fund for Promising Young Artists Art Show and Contest. Participants are encouraged to join us for a workshop prior to the contest.

This fund was established in memory of Lucia Bocchino, artist, mother and wife. It is to encourage young artists in the early stages of their lives. For more information, please visit

  • Drawing Workshop with Serena Bocchino (Ages 6 years to 18 years)

    This workshop is offered each year in April

    Please join us for a Drawing/Painting Workshop taught by Serena Bocchino, Executive Director for the Lucia Bocchino Fund. Ms. Bocchino has a Master's Degree from New York University and has received recognition from New York City's Artists Space, P.S. 1 Contemporary Art Center, the Museum of Modern Art and New Jersey State Council on the Arts. Additionally, the Pollock-Krasner Foundation and the Brodsky Center for Innovative Print and Paper have awarded Ms. Bocchino Fellowship grants. Her work is represented in public, private and corporate collections around the world. Fulfills requirements for Girl Scout Junior Drawing Badge (included). Space is limited.

    Explore old and new art masters.We introduce different artistic expressions and learn various mediums such as drawing, painting, and sculpture. Classes are 45 minutes long. 

Drama (Ages 5 years to 15 years)
  • Y Drama School
    Join us for improv, playwriting, character building, team building and more! Children will create a piece of theater that will be showcased at the end of the session.

    Classes are 2 hours long.
