On Monday, June 3, 2019 Somerset County and Plainfield YMCA will hold its 29th annual Golf Classic at Roxiticus Golf Club. The signature fundraiser contributes to the Y’s ability to provide financial assistance to individuals and families in the community who struggle financially, physically and emotionally, so they have access to vital programs and services.
2019 GOLF CLASSIC HONOREE:
The Raynes Family & Saturdays in Motion Program
This year, Somerset County and Plainfield YMCA honors the Raynes family for their dedication to the Y's cause of strengthening the community. Art Raynes founded the Saturday's in Motion (SIM) program 27 years ago, and it is believed to be the country's longest running non-public recreational program for children on the autism spectrum and their families.
The program embraces all three Y areas of focus: youth development, healthy living and social responsibility, all while strengthening our community. The program focuses on youth development by allowing children with autism to gain confidence and personal connections with volunteers, while the teen volunteers gain leadership skills and learn to appreciate the value of giving back. With a focus on healthy living, the program inspires children with special needs and their siblings to engage in physical exercise while offering parents the benefit of reduced stress through caregiving respite. The program celebrates social responsibility by inspiring volunteerism and addressing an unmet need in the community, all at no cost to participating families.
“Art Raynes, along with his family, are true heroes not only to the Y, but to all families who participate in Saturdays in Motion,” said President and CEO of Somerset County and Plainfield YMCA David M. Carcieri. “We are honored to offer this amazing program that helps so many people within our community. We’re very proud of the work Art and his volunteers do to help make Saturdays in Motion so successful. It’s because of this hard work and commitment, which resonates throughout the Y, that we are able to provide this recreational and respite program to those in need.”
