Hillsborough NJ, May 19, 2017 – Hillsborough YMCA, a branch of Somerset County YMCA, will host its 17th annual Hop 5K walk/run on Saturday, June 3. The race kicks off at 8:00am at Hillsborough YMCA, wraps through neighborhood streets and finishes at Hillsborough Township Municipal building where families are encouraged to stay for the Township’s Green Living and Wellness Fair. The community is invited to enjoy music, high-energy warm ups and a fun, family-friendly walk/run for all ages.
The Hop 5K, a long-standing community tradition, is a signature fundraiser for Hillsborough YMCA, helping to ensure that the Y can continue to offer vital services and resources to individuals and families in our community who struggle financially, physically or emotionally. Proceeds from the race contribute to the Y’s ability to provide those in need with access to critical programs and services to help them live happy, healthy and fulfilled lives.
“We are proud to host an event that engages families, neighbors and local businesses in partnering to create a healthier tomorrow for all,” said Somerset County YMCA President and CEO, David M. Carcieri. “At the Y, we recognize that healthy habits are important at every age. The Hop 5K draws roughly 1,000 participants, half of whom are under the age of 18 years old. It is a pleasure to see people of all ages, volunteers, cheering neighbors and community partners, all demonstrating their belief that together we can build a brighter future.”
In 2016, Somerset County YMCA provided nearly $1.3 million in direct financial assistance to neighbors who, otherwise, could not afford childcare, summer camp, membership, senior programs and more. Additionally, Somerset County YMCA provided over $600,000 in support of low- and no-cost programs and services that address the critical social needs of our community. They include LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA, a free community program to help cancer survivors begin the journey to recovery; Enhance®Fitness, a program that offers hope and strength to senior Y members who suffer from arthritis; and 7th Grade Initiative, a free year-long membership program designed to inspire life-long healthy habits at a pivotal age.
Sponsorships of the Hop 5K augment the overall success of the event. Returning for the third year as the award sponsor is Hillsborough Youth Services Commission, which continues to invest in expanding running programs in Hillsborough. Additional supporters include College Hunks Hauling Junk, Hillsborough Radiology Centers and RWJ Barnabas Sports Physical Therapy.
Prizes will be awarded to top finishers in age, gender and family categories. A ‘Hoppy Award’ will also go to the Hillsborough Township school with the greatest percentage of student participants.
Members of the community are invited to volunteer, to run in the race, or to join in the fun by stepping outside to cheer on the runners. Runners may register online at www.somersetcountyymca.org/hop through May 31st, or on Friday, June 2 in-person at Hillsborough YMCA.
