The Y offers valuable trainings for teens to develop skills that help to open doors to employment opportunities. Teens can get certified in lifeguarding, CPR and First-Aid.

CPR/AED Training
  • CPR/AED Full Class

    This American Heart Association BLS classroom-based course teaches how to recognize several life-threatening emergencies, provide CPR to victims of all ages, use an AED, and relieve choking in a safe, timely, and effective manner. Pocket mask and textbook included.

  • CPR/AED Review

    This is an American Red Cross review class for people who have current professional level CPR cards. Cards must be brought to class. Mask included.

    Classes are 2 hours 30 minutes long.

Lifeguard Training (Ages 15 years and above)

Learn the skills and knowledge to perform water rescues. Participants will receive an American Red Cross lifeguarding, First Aid and CPR/AED for professional rescuer certificate. Participants must pass a pre-test before taking the course.

  • Lifeguard Pretest (Ages 15 years and above)

    Please register for your pretest. Once you pass the pretest, you will be enrolled in and charged for the next Lifeguard Certification course.

    Participants must swim 300 yards continuously as follows – 100 yards front crawl; 100 yards breaststroke; 100 yards front crawl or breaststroke. Swimming goggles may be used during the 300 yard swim. Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs. Candidates should place their hands under their armpits. Swim 20 yards, submerge 7 – 10 feet, retrieve a ten-pound brick, and swim 20 yards carrying the brick in both hands within 1 minute, 40 seconds. Goggles may not be worn during this swim.

  • Waterfront Lifeguarding Pretest (Ages 15 years and above)

    Must pass the Pre-Test before taking the course. Pretest will be done on the first day of class at 4PM. Upon successful completion, all candidates will be certified with Pool & Waterfront Lifeguard, First Aid and CPR for the Professional Rescuer. Participants must be 15 by the end of the course. Re-certification held at Somerville YMCA.

  • Lifeguarding Certification Course (Ages 15 and above)

    Curriculum includes classroom work, practical skills in the water and on land and two final written exams. Participants must be 15 by the end of the course. Attendance is required at all classes.

    A pre-test must be passed first: Participants must swim 300 yards continuously as follows – 100 yards front crawl; 100 yards breaststroke; 100 yards front crawl or breaststroke. Swimming goggles may be used during the 300 yard swim. Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs. Candidates should place their hands under their armpits. Swim 20 yards, submerge 7 – 10 feet, retrieve a ten-pound brick, and swim 20 yards carrying the brick in both hands within 1 minute, 40 seconds. Goggles may not be worn during this swim.

Babysitting Training (Ages 11 years and above)

  • Babysitter Training (Ages 11 years and above)

    This American Red Cross course is designed for students ages 11 years and older and teaches how to respond to emergencies with first aid and rescue breathing, making good decisions under pressure, communicating effectively with parents, recognizing safety and hygiene issues, managing young children, and how to feed, diaper and care for infants. This 6-hour, in-person course also provides some basic First Aid training, as well as basic tools for youth to manage a babysitting business. The cost is $125.

    This will be an American Heart Association, American Red Cross, or an American Safety & Health Institute course that covers checking scene safety; legal considerations; addressing bleeding, burns, bone and muscle injuries; and sudden illnesses. Textbook is included.
