At the Y, we believe that building confidence is very important. Through gymnastics we help to foster self-esteem and stress the importance of our core values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.

At Somerville YMCA, our outstanding gymnastics program, for children through the age of 18, develops gymnasts through proper learning progressions, as well as teaches correct form and technique. Our goal is to foster self-confidence as gymnasts refine their skills. Children who love gymnastics can try out for our competitive team.

Kids Gymnastics Classes (Ages 4 years to 18 years)

The benefits of exercise through gymnastics will carry over to all aspects of kids’ lives. Gymnastics helps to develop their whole “self” and to build strength physically and emotionally.

  • Girls Level 1 & 2 Gymnastics (Ages 4 years to 7 years)

    Beginner and Intermediate level gymnastics. This level focuses on all the basics of bars, beam, vault and floor to teach the skills needed to advance in the sport.

    Classes are 60 minutes long.

  • Girls Level 1 & 2 Gymnastics (Ages 8 years to 18 years)

    Beginner and Intermediate level gymnastics. This level focuses on all the basics of bars, beam, vault and floor to teach the skills needed to advance in the sport.

    Classes are 60 minutes long.

  • Girls Level 3 Gymnastics (Ages 4 years to 18 years)

    Moving beyond Level 1 & 2, Girls Level 3 gymnasts refine their skills. When appropriate skills are achieved, they can try out for Gymnastics Pre-Team. All participants need the coach’s approval to register. Please email coach for a tryout session. Current members may register online.

    Classes are 120 minutes long.

  • Boys Gymnastics (Ages 4 years to 18 years)

    Try a sport that requires strength, precision and dedication. Designed specifically for boys, this class works on skills and events performed in competition.

    Classes are 60 minutes long.

  • Beginner Cheer/Tumble (Ages 5 years to 14 years)

    Get your tumble on! Learn those skills needed for your cheer season - from forward rolls and cartwheels all the way up to walkovers.

    Classes are 1 hour long.

  • Advanced Cheer/Tumble (Ages 5 years to 14 years)

    Get your tumble on! Learn those skills needed for your cheer season - from walkovers to handsprings, tucks, layouts and twists.

    Classes are 1 hour long.

Gymnastics Team (Ages 4 years to 18 years)

The Gymnastic Team season runs from September through June for all team levels. Tryouts are held annually in June and August; however, qualified gymnasts may join through December.  For more information, please email the coach, Rachel Covert.

  • Boys Pre-Team Gymnastics (Ages 4 years to 18 years)

    Almost ready for the gymnastics team? An extra day of practice can help to enhance skills.  Classes are 90 minutes long.

  • Girls Pre-Team Gymnastics (Ages 4 years to 18 years)

    Almost ready for the gymnastics team? An extra day of practice can help to enhance skills. Classes are 90 minutes long.

Gymnastics Team Meets (Ages 4 years to 18 years)
Through our great gymnastics teams, kids and teens have a chance to further develop gymnastics technique while training as a team to compete in several meets during the school year, as well as perform at other Y events. Team members may register for meets here.
