Swim Lessons for Adults

Swimming is a vital life skill. Understanding water safety and how to swim minimizes the risk of drowning while building self-reliance. 

Experienced instructors offer group and private swim lessons for all ages and abilities at Bridgewater, Hillsborough, Somerset Hills and Somerville YMCAs. Swim lessons are offered year-round. You will find an online registration button with each class description below. Private Swim Lessons

Swimming is a vital life skill. Understanding water safety and how to swim minimizes the risk of drowning while building self-reliance. The Y’s skilled and patient swim instructors offer lessons for all ages and abilities.

Adult Swim Classes & Programs (Ages 17+ years)
  • Swim Basics Class: Adult (17+ years | formerly Adult Beginner)
    Introduces personal water safety, basic swimming skills and the fundamentals of front and back crawl. No Prerequisite.

  • Swim Strokes Class: Adult (17+ years | formerly Adult Intermediate)
    Builds upon water safety skills and front and back crawl mastered in Swim Basics, while building stroke technique and introducing breaststroke and swimming for fitness.

  • Water Exercise Programs

    Water exercise is great for adults of all ages and abilities looking for fun and fitness in a low impact environment. Classes are offered in the daytime and on some evenings as well as “on your own” opportunities to water walk and do your own workout routine.

Swim the Seas
Join our 8-week Swim the Seas Program from October 23 – December 17 and challenge yourself to a virtual swim across the English Channel. Swim at Bridgewater YMCA and Somerville YMCA as often as you like, anywhere from 2 to 40+ miles, to achieve your own personal goal. Log your swims and total mileage, which will be posted weekly. Most of all, have fun!

To participate, complete the Fall 2017 Swim the Seas registration form and return to the Aquatics Director. Check the schedule for open swim times.

Not only is swimming a life skill, but this program will help you develop a healthier lifestyle through swimming, build friendships through our members, and grow by meeting your personal fitness goals.

  • Arthritis and WET (Water Exercise Together)

    AFYAP is a class consisting of a series of gentle activities in the pool open to anyone with arthritis or similar rheumatic diseases. W.E.T. is gentle aerobics, flexibility and light strength training in a warm, therapeutic pool. It is not necessary to know how to swim for either class. Free to members and a fee for non-members. Pre-registration is necessary. Please register at the Welcome Center.
