Social Activities for Seniors


Staying active and connected to the community is important at every age in terms of quality of life and independence. At the Y, we hope you take advantage of the fabulous host of fitness programs, swim offerings, social events, and volunteer opportunities the Y offers for seniors. We'll help you stay strong and healthy in spirit, mind and body, while you enjoy the companionship of your peers.

Hillsborough YMCA

Senior Fitness

Our Senior Adult fitness classes for active older adults include:

  • Functional Fitness
  • Yoga
  • Pilates
  • Y Walking Club (during warm months, weather permitting)

All members interested in learning how to use the cardiovascular and strength equipment may request a fitness orientation. These are free of charge.

  • Open Pickleball

    This paddle sport is designed for all ages and skill levels. Simple rules make it perfect for beginners and it can develop into a fast-paced game. You'll get great exercise while having a ball!

  • Senior Strength Training (Ages 55 years and above)

    Did you know older adult functioning is positively influenced by weight training and cardiovascular exercise? Upon completion of this 6-week progressive class, led by a nationally certified personal trainer, you will have the confidence and knowledge to work out on your own.

    Classes are 60 minutes long.

Book Club

Join us for lively discussions of great reads each first Thursday of the month. We start off with a potluck lunch at noon, so bring a food item to share. Conversation about the book follows at 12:30 pm. Here’s a sampling of what we’ve read in the past year:

Leisure Club

Please join us for monthly presentations and activities that are free to members and $5/activity to the community and former Leisure Club members. Every 2nd Wednesday of the month, the Y will host leisure activities for seniors from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm.

Registration and payment is required for all members and non-members at the Welcome Center.

Senior Fitness

Our Senior Adult fitness classes for active older adults include:

  • Small Group Exercise Classes including Zumba Gold, Strength & Balance, Mellow Step, Yoga, Yogalates, Core & Flexibility

  • Kinesis sessions for seniors takes traditional exercises (like chest press or a row) and combines them with functional movements (like reaching, squatting, bending). It develops balance, core/overall strength, and flexibility for people of all fitness levels.

All members interested in learning how to use the cardiovascular and strength equipment may request a fitness orientation. These are free of charge.

  • Enhance®Fitness
    Enhance®Fitness is an evidence-based group exercise program for older adults that uses simple, easy-to-learn movements that motivate individuals (particularly those with arthritis) to stay active throughout their life.

Additional Social Activities

Come share what you love to do or find out what will give you a sense of purpose and accomplishment when you become a key part of our many groups including:

  • Health Discussions - Learn about how to prevent slips and falls, how to improve your nutrition, or attend a blood pressure and cholesterol screening...plus so much more
  • Knit & Crochet - Bring a project to work on or come and learn how to knit and crochet
  • Line Dancing – Learn new moves as you exercise your body and mind
  • Rummikub, Mahjongg, Scrabble, Bridge, Canasta
  • Senior Conversation
  • Singing – share your talent, accompanied by the guitar
  • Stampin Up - Design artistic greeting cards with pre-cut supplies
  • Watercolor - Indulge your artistic side as our knowledgeable instructors guide you through the process
